The US Air Force had plans for a manned space station in the 1960's  Called the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) the project was cancelled before the space station was launched. However, a test flight to see if the launch configuration was stable and to test the heat shield of the Gemini spacecraft was flown in 1966.
