In preparation for the planned Apollo manned lunar landings, NASA launched the Lunar Orbiter series of five missions in the mid-1960s to map the surface of the moon in high resolution. An innovative system of film, automatic processing, and scanning of the developed negatives sent back hundreds of photos which helped mission planners to choose landing sites.
